Description

Freud had ever seen twenty-first-century neuroscientists actually scanning and mapping the brain and its neural circuitry, he'd have shouted "Eureka!" for he would have seen the amygdala, an almond-shaped cluster in the brain where emotions are generated and stored.

"When aroused, the amygdala floods the entire body with neurochemical signals that leave behind a vivid and indelible trace of fear, anger, grief, happiness, surprise, or shame." – Daniel Goleman Emotional Intelligence. It was the words of Daniel Goleman that inspired Joe Joyce, whilst reading Goleman’s book, Emotional Intelligence, on a flight to Ibiza. Goleman's introduction to the Amygdala explained so many things.

Have you ever listened to a piece of music and felt an unexplained and powerful emotional response? Studies suggest amygdala play an important function in our response to music, scanning the incoming frequencies and connecting them to an emotional memory, which in turn triggers a physical and emotional response. You may experience "shivers–down–the–spine or "chills" and your heart may begin to race. This piece of music sets out to stimulate Amygdala.

The original composition offers many emotional triggers. It’s a journey, which brings you gradually from darkness and melancholy to light, positivity and joy. The original mix by Joe Joyce offers a revival of more traditional techno rhythms, accompanied by oriental percussion and bell like timbres. Vocal drones instil a feeling of suspense and darkness, before a release of melodic gamelans calm and soothe your Amydala's fight or flight response.

Enjoy the ride! Amygdala is supported by two exceptional remixes, which take the track to completely different corners. Nadja Lind of Klartraum has drawn a deep minimal response, really working the tribal percussive element. Sonically, this mix is untouchable, and will literally rock a club system from the core.

Maya Jane Coles demonstrates her unmistakable musical competence with a more uplifting response, drawing many elements of the original piece into an exciting and dance floor friendly composition, which would work almost anywhere.

Amygdala from Underbelly records is an unmissable release with three completely unique mixes that offer something for everyone. Listen if you dare!
